How High Should You Cut Your Cape Cod Lawn?

Most lawn problems we get called about — thin spots, weeds, scorched patches — trace back to one habit: cutting the grass too short. It feels efficient, since you mow less often, but a low cut is one of the quickest ways to weaken a Cape Cod lawn.

Aim for 3 to 3.5 Inches

For the cool-season grasses common on Cape Cod, set your mower deck to cut at 3 to 3.5 inches, especially through the summer. Taller grass:

A short, “golf course” cut does the opposite — it bakes the soil, stresses the roots, and opens the door for weeds.

Follow the One-Third Rule

Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing. Cutting more than that shocks the plant, slows root growth, and leaves the lawn vulnerable to heat and disease.

Example: If your target height is 3 inches, mow when the grass reaches about 4.5 inches — that takes off roughly a third and lands you back at 3.

During fast spring growth this may mean mowing more than once a week. It’s worth it.

Keep Your Blade Sharp

A dull blade tears grass instead of slicing it, leaving ragged, frayed tips that turn brown and invite disease. Sharpen your mower blade at least once or twice a season — more if you have a large property. If the lawn looks whitish or brown a day after mowing, a dull blade is usually the culprit.

Mow When the Grass Is Dry

Wet grass clumps, clogs the mower, and tears unevenly. Mowing dry also reduces the risk of spreading lawn disease across the yard. Aim for mid-morning, once the dew has burned off but before the afternoon heat peaks.

Leave the Clippings

Unless they’re long and clumping, let grass clippings fall back onto the lawn. They break down quickly and return nitrogen to the soil — free fertilizer that can cut your feeding needs noticeably over a season.

Raise the Deck in a Heat Wave

When a stretch of hot, dry weather hits, raise your cutting height another half-inch. The extra length protects the crown of the plant and helps the lawn ride out the stress instead of going dormant or burning out.
